Average offset includes your hardware — Bluetooth headphones alone can add 100 ms, and every speaker adds something. Consistency (the ± figure) is the number worth chasing: it measures you, not your kit. Average 0 ms off the click in either direction.
How the timing score works
Every click is scheduled against the browser’s audio clock, and every tap is stamped from the same clock, so the offset between them is measured in real milliseconds rather than guessed from a timer. Two numbers come out:
- Average offset — whether you sit ahead of or behind the click. Positive is late, negative is early. This figure includes your hardware: Bluetooth headphones can add 100 ms or more of output latency, and even a laptop speaker adds a few tens of a millisecond, so treat it as a tendency rather than a verdict.
- Consistency (±) — how much your taps vary around your own average. Latency shifts every tap by the same amount, so it cannot flatter this number. Under about 35 ms is genuinely tight playing; drummers chasing a click aim for the low tens.
Rushing is far more common than dragging. If your average offset is negative on most rounds, you are anticipating the click — try counting the subdivision out loud rather than the beat.
Reading rhythm: the echo drill
The read-and-echo drill puts one bar of notation on screen, plays it once with the metronome, and hands you the next bar. Each note is then graded on its own, so you can see exactly which one you rushed — usually the note after a rest, or the offbeat.
The ten patterns move from four plain quarter notes to a bar of nothing but offbeats, with two waltz bars in 3/4 at the end. Rests appear as gaps in the grid, which is how one-bar rhythm figures are conventionally set, and the counting line under the staff names the beats that carry a note — say it out loud before you play it. If a pattern falls apart, drop the tempo by 20 BPM rather than trying harder: rhythm is learned at the speed you can be accurate.
Practice notes
- Use the count-in. Starting cold means the first two beats are always a guess. One bar of clicks first, and the drill measures your playing rather than your reaction time.
- Slow is not easier. Very slow tempos expose timing badly, because there is more space to drift in. If 60 BPM feels harder than 100, that is normal, and worth practising.
- Watch as well as listen. The pulse dots follow the same schedule as the clicks, so you can practise with the sound off if you need to be quiet — and if you are hard of hearing, the visual pulse alone is enough to run every drill.
- Two minutes is a session. Timing practice is fatiguing in a way that scales are not. Short and frequent wins.
