How B works

B major is white–black–black, the mirror image of A♭ major, and the dominant of E. Five sharps look intimidating on the page, but the hand shape is simple and it turns up in guitar-led songs all the time.

B inversions

An inversion keeps the same notes and changes which one is at the bottom. That matters because it lets you move between chords without jumping: the closer the notes of the next chord are to the ones your hand is already holding, the smoother it sounds and the easier it is to play. Root position first, then two inversions.

  • Root position

B–D♯–F♯ — the root, B, is at the bottom.

  • 1st inversion — D♯ in the bass

    B major, 1st inversion — D sharp in the bass: D sharp, F sharp, BBD♯E♭F♯G♭

D♯–F♯–B — the same three notes, reordered so D♯ is lowest.

  • 2nd inversion — F♯ in the bass

    B major, 2nd inversion — F sharp in the bass: F sharp, B, D sharpBF♯G♭D♯E♭

F♯–B–D♯ — the same three notes, reordered so F♯ is lowest.

Common mistakes on B

  • Playing D natural instead of D♯, which gives B minor.
  • Cramping the hand because both upper notes are black; keep the fingers curved and move the hand in as a unit.
  • Reading the top note as G♭ — in B major it is spelled F♯.
